Caterpillar Equipment, the world’s largest construction equipment manufacturer, is making significant strides in electric construction equipment innovation. This advancement is highlighted by their recent strategic agreement with CRH, a prominent Ireland-based building materials provider.
This pivotal agreement was formalized when CRH executives joined hands with Caterpillar President Denise Johnson at Caterpillar’s headquarters in Irving, Texas. This partnership marks a milestone for Caterpillar equipment, as CRH is the first North American aggregates producer to enter such a collaboration with Cat.
Central to this agreement is the electrification of construction equipment. Caterpillar is leading the charge in deploying zero-exhaust emissions solutions in their caterpillar equipment lineup. Denise Johnson of Caterpillar emphasized the importance of diverse sustainability solutions for the quarry and aggregates industry.
CRH’s involvement in Caterpillar’s Early Learner program for battery electric off-highway trucks is a significant aspect of this partnership. This initiative will test and validate electric construction equipment in real-world applications. Caterpillar’s commitment to electric construction equipment is evident in their recent developments. In late 2023, they showcased a battery-powered underground mining truck prototype. This followed the 2022 unveiling of the 793 electric surface-level mining truck. Recognition of their sustainability efforts came in May 2023 when USA Today included Caterpillar in America’s Climate Leaders List for their significant reduction in carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions.
Caterpillar’s journey towards sustainability began in 2006, with continuous refinement of their goals. Their impressive achievement of a 51% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity from 2006 to 2020 sets a precedent in the industry. The company’s 2022 Sustainability Report further highlighted a 33% reduction in these emissions since 2018.
