In a groundbreaking development, London-based Balfour Beatty initiated construction in November for the Universal Kids Resort located in the heart of Frisco, Texas. Brian Bruce, the Director of Corporate Communications for Universal Destinations & Experiences, a division of Comcast NBCUniversal, shared this exciting news. This remarkable project marks the company’s maiden foray into the world of theme parks exclusively designed for young children.
While Universal executives did not officially disclose the project’s cost, reports from Axios suggest Universal anticipates investing at least $550 million in this venture. This theme park will be intentionally designed on a smaller scale to ensure a more immersive and enjoyable experience for its younger audience. A pivotal component of the project will be the construction of a 300-room resort hotel, as outlined in a press release from Universal.
According to Brian Bruce, Universal has enlisted the expertise of Gensler, a renowned architecture firm with extensive experience designing theme parks, to bring this imaginative venture to life.
Vertical construction is slated to commence in early 2024, with key sections of the park scheduled to open by mid-2026. As confirmed in an official release, this ambitious project is expected to create approximately 2,500 construction jobs in the local area.
Universal Kids Resort promises to offer a unique ambiance compared to its existing parks. Covering approximately one-quarter of the designated area, this new resort will occupy less than half of Universal’s sprawling 97-acre site situated off the Dallas North Tollway.
This destination will feature various “lands” themed around beloved Universal Studios characters and films, offering an array of thrilling rides, fascinating shows, delectable dining options, delightful shops, and enchanting character meet-and-greet experiences.
The Frisco City Council granted its approval for the special-use zoning permit required for the theme park back in March. As part of the incentive package, the city will provide Universal with $12.7 million in support for the project. However, certain stipulations must be met, including the opening of the park and hotel by June 2026 and compliance with other requirements.
Universal and city officials are optimistic that the park will attract approximately 20,000 visitors on weekends and holidays, with an estimated daily average of 7,500 visitors on weekdays. As stated in an official city press release, Frisco’s selection as the location for this new resort is attributed to the city’s burgeoning population and its capacity to draw businesses.
